BUYER GUIDE

Cotton Tote Small Text Needs a Full-Size Readability Trial

Approve small lettering on cotton totes with actual-size alternatives, open letter spaces and an identified printed reference before releasing the artwork.

The long credit line is clear when the designer zooms in. On the cotton sample, the spaces inside several letters have almost disappeared. Enlarging the whole logo might rescue that line, but it could also upset a layout the brand has already accepted.

Test the legibility of small text on the cotton tote before changing the whole layout. A short set of full-size lettering alternatives on the proposed cloth lets the buyer choose a readable version while seeing exactly what has changed.

Separate letter height from the detail inside it

A font size alone leaves important questions unanswered. Compare the narrow strokes, enclosed spaces, gaps between letters and any outline surrounding them. Two fonts at the same nominal size can leave quite different openings.

Transfer Express illustrates lettering closure in its own screen-printed transfers, including the loss of spaces within and between letters. Its product guidance supports asking about those details. It is not a universal minimum font size for direct printing, every transfer material or a textured cotton canvas.

Make a small lettering trial rather than another complete logo

Take the actual difficult wording, not a convenient substitute. A museum credit might contain a surname, an accent, a date and a copyright mark. Those characters belong in the trial because an easy block-capital word does not represent them.

Ask the designer for three clearly labelled options: the original, a larger version and an authorised version with more open lettering. Mark the printed width and height in millimetres. Where the design uses reversed lettering, include that treatment too; inked letters and openings within an inked background need separate observation.

Keep the agreed wording unchanged between options. This is a lettering size comparison, not permission to abbreviate a credit or replace an approved typeface. The artwork specification guide holds the master file and final layout once the choice is made.

What makes small lettering readable on a cotton tote?

Review the printed lettering at its intended size on the proposed fabric and with the proposed decoration. Agree a practical viewing distance and lighting, then read the complete line without magnifying the sample. Keep a close photograph for describing a closed letter, not as a substitute for reading the bag.

Record each option as accepted, needing revision or not suitable. Note the exact character or space that caused difficulty. For example, the original may lose the opening in a lower-case letter while the larger option remains readable. That observation is more useful than calling the whole print blurry.

Does a larger digital preview prove that fine text will print clearly? No. Retain the physical lettering reference and connect it to the final file. Recheck the chosen wording in the complete design, where handles and normal panel movement may change how it is seen.

The finished-sample approval record should identify the selected lettering option, actual dimensions, cloth and process. A later change of font, fabric or print size reopens that decision.

Confirm a requested 100% cotton body separately from handles, thread and decoration. Readability does not establish composition, certification or an environmental saving. If repeated use is the aim, the accepted wording still needs to sit on a useful bag with supported care advice.

Send Gahumi the exact wording, authorised artwork alternatives, proposed dimensions, bag reference and quantities. Ask which lettering trial can be reviewed, with feasibility, sample cost and timing confirmed for the project.
